If phone and internet bills are becoming unaffordable, start with the federal Lifeline program. It lowers the monthly cost of phone, internet, or bundled service for eligible households.

01

How much help does Lifeline provide?

In 2026, the standard Lifeline discount is up to $9.25 each month. The discount can be up to $34.25 each month for people living on qualifying Tribal lands.

02

Who can qualify?

A household may qualify if its income is no more than 135% of the 2026 Federal Poverty Guidelines. A household can also qualify through Medicaid, SNAP, Supplemental Security Income, federal housing assistance, or the Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit. A child or dependent's participation in a qualifying program may also count.

03

What should I do first?

  1. 1.Check the Lifeline eligibility page for the 2026 income limit for your household size and state.
  2. 2.Gather proof of income or participation in a qualifying assistance program. Lifeline may request a benefit letter, official program document, tax return, or three consecutive months of pay stubs.
  3. 3.Apply through Lifeline. For application help, call 800-234-9473. Support is available every day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time.
  4. 4.After approval, contact a participating phone or internet company and ask it to apply the benefit.

What if Lifeline is not enough?

Dial 211 and ask about local phone, internet, utility, and other basic needs assistance. Calls can be confidential and anonymous. Local 211 specialists are available around the clock.
