When a veteran needs help with care, start with the VA social worker. Ask about Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care and Respite Care. Also screen the veteran for Veterans Pension with Aid and Attendance.
What VA care can Dad receive at home?
The VA Homemaker and Home Health Aide program can provide help with eating, dressing, grooming, bathing, using the bathroom, moving around, and grocery shopping. A registered nurse can assess Dad’s daily living needs, and a VA social worker can help arrange available services.
VA Respite Care can provide short term relief for a family caregiver. Depending on local availability, care may happen at home, in an adult day program, or in a nursing home.
Could he receive a monthly pension payment?
Veterans Pension provides monthly payments to qualifying wartime veterans. Dad must meet military service, discharge, age or disability, income, and net worth rules.
Aid and Attendance can increase a VA pension if Dad needs another person’s help with daily activities, spends much of the day in bed because of illness, lives in a nursing home because of a disability, or meets the VA eyesight standard.
What should the family do first?
- 1.Ask a registered nurse to assess Dad’s daily living needs, and ask his VA social worker to help arrange Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care and Respite Care.
- 2.Gather his military history, discharge information, household income, assets, and unreimbursed medical expenses.
- 3.Check Veterans Pension eligibility, including whether his active duty included a recognized wartime period.
- 4.If he may qualify, ask a free VA accredited Veterans Service Organization representative to help with the pension application and Aid and Attendance forms.
What paperwork may be needed?
For Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits by mail, use VA Form 21-2680. A medical examiner must complete the examination section. A nursing home resident may also need VA Form 21-0779.
Questions families ask
Does military service alone qualify Dad?
No. Veterans Pension also has discharge, service period, age or disability, income, and net worth requirements. VA home care services have separate enrollment, clinical, community care, and availability rules.
How much could Veterans Pension with Aid and Attendance provide?
For rates effective December 1, 2025, the maximum annual pension rate for a veteran with no dependents who qualifies for Aid and Attendance is $29,093. With one dependent, it is $34,488. The actual payment is generally the difference between income for VA purposes and the applicable annual limit. These limits are adjusted each year.
Do care expenses matter when VA calculates pension?
They can. Certain unreimbursed medical expenses may reduce income for VA pension purposes. Keep bills, receipts, payment records, and insurance statements.
Will VA home care be free?
Not always. Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care and Respite Care may have copays. Eligibility, availability, and copay rules depend on the service and Dad’s circumstances. A registered nurse can assess his daily living needs, and his VA social worker can help make arrangements.
